January is often seen as a time to start fresh—new year, new you, they say. This mindset, while well-intentioned, can be overwhelming, especially for unpaid carers who are already juggling so much.

For many carers, the idea of setting ambitious new goals can feel more like a burden than an opportunity for growth. With so much of your time and energy dedicated to others, it’s natural to feel like you have little control over your own life. And that’s okay.

It’s important to recognize that the societal pressure to overhaul your life in the new year isn’t realistic for everyone, especially those caring for others. You don’t need to set lofty resolutions or make radical changes to be successful or fulfilled. It’s okay to start the year off slowly, to have small, manageable goals, or even to have no goals at all. Sometimes, just getting through the day is an achievement in itself.

Prioritize your mental health instead of jumping into unsustainable health fads or pushing yourself beyond your limits. Take time for rest, take care of your emotional well-being, and give yourself permission to do what feels right for you. Remember, self-care isn’t selfish, it’s necessary – you need to put the oxygen mask on yourself before helping anyone else!

As you move through this new year, please remember to try and be kind to yourself – take things one step at a time. You’re doing more than enough. And if you ever need support, Carer Support Dorset is here for you. Whether it’s a listening ear, practical advice, guidance around money and finances or simply a space where you can feel understood, we’re here to help you through every step of your caring journey.

You’re not alone in 2025.
